As if math wasn’t already intense as fuck. Who’s fucking idea was it to add letters and imaginary numbers, Im going to fight them
We actually discovered a need for letters! It is a place holder for an unknown quantity or a quantity that changes, referred to as a variable.
Imaginary and complex numbers were discovered by an equality x squared is equal to negative one
x^2 = -1
So, x^2 means take a number and multiply it to itself twice.
Well, a positive multiplied to a positive equals a positive. A negative times a negative is positive.
This means that x^2 can never be negative for any real number.
But we can solve that equation by taking the square root of both sides!
sqrt(x^2) = +- sqrt(-1)
x = +- sqrt(-1)
The square root of negative one is not real! There is no solution for that! So, mathematicians of the time called it an imaginary number!
i = sqrt(-1)
