su fandom makes me mad the way they simplify garnet’s character & like, all the elaborate and fleshed out head-canons about pearl & amethyst, and fierce identifications with their characters, with perfunctory mentions of how “great” garnet is with little actual emotionally invested in unpacking her? it’s transparent and just reminds me that non-black people will never see themselves in black women characters. and like, i can already hear people being like “ohhh i relate to amethyst and pearl’s mental illness!! and garnet is just so perfect!” but like??? have y’all seen garnet?

she intentionally holds herself at a wide emotional distance from literally everyone because all of her attempts at intimacy end in disaster. she desires connection but knows that she’s powerful and potentially volatile and so keeps herself under tight emotional control, until it occasionally gets out impulsively, then ends in disaster such as in the futurevision ep with steven (thereby reinforcing that she needs to stay the fuck away from people); 

also see sugalite. like, amethyst is not even the one to suggest fusing. it’s garnet. she’s so excited and so Let’s Fucking Do This out of nowhere and without thought all impulsively, and it ends so poorly and it causes so much hurt. 

all these random missions where she just goes off alone and tells pearl and amethyst they need to stay home??? like, were this any other character, people would read into that. people would ask, “what the fuck is going on there?” what’s making her do this?

but no it’s just this like, weird flip of the Independent Black Woman / Black Women Are Emotional Rocks trope. because she’s a fusion y’all write it off as she’s just happy. she’s just good. but like they all a mess…all dese gems a goddamn mess.

& there’s more. like, maybe there’s the one-off post about garnet’s mental stuff but it seems so little compared to how much this fandom invests in pearl and amethyst. garnet is liked/loved but in a really superficial, romanticizing way. 

of course she’s so fuckt up by what pearl did (and god bless pearl’s heart tbh like i get it i get it!!!) because a) it shitted majorly on boundaries and was a super consent violation but also, b) like, garnet is already so weary of forming these connections and this is just one more instance that proves her right? that she’s better off alone although she desperately desires intimacy and connection. smh. 

i’m sure there got to be autistic garnet head canons out there because obviously!!!! but all i see is pearl & amethyst & pearl & amethyst, who are great, mind you, but it’s suspicious that the obviously black-coded character gets treated by fandom in this way so in line with how they get treated in every other one.
